The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has, on Wednesday 30th August, 2017 launched its maiden edition of inter-university quiz and debate at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The competition which was launched by H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo forms part of the commission's celebrations of Ghana's 60th independence anniversary.
The Commission recognises the need to create awareness of the provisions of the 1992 constitution among citizens especially the youth who will in the near future take up the mantle of leadership of the country.
Speaking at the launch, President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to jealously guard the constitution and not to lose sight of the country's history adding that, every citizen need to know and understand the laws governing the country.
He expressed firm believe in the commission's ability to discharge its constitutional mandate.
Madam Josephine Nkrumah, chairperson of the commission noted that, it is imperative that the role of the youth in shaping the destiny of the country *is* accentuated after 60 years of independence.
"After 60 years of attaining independence, and significantly 25 years of constitutional rule under the fourth republican constitution which embodies our hopes and aspirations as a people, the role of the youth in shaping the destiny of this country now more than ever should be accentuated. In the commission's view, this is necessary if we as Ghanaians are seriously pursuing a national transformation agenda," said the chairperson.
She explained that, the theme for the competition, "Restoring our Ghanaian Values as Active Citizens" was carefully crafted from the commission's theme for 2017 which placed emphasises on Ghanaian values and identity.
The maiden edition of the inter university debate seeks to promote good citizenship among the youth using the electronic quiz competition.
To participate in the competition, students are expected to learn the contents of the 1992 constitution.
