President Akufo-Addo Launches NCCE's Inter-University Quiz/Debate

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has, on Wednesday 30th August, 2017 launched its maiden edition of inter-university quiz and debate at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The competition which was launched by H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo forms part of the commission's celebrations of Ghana's 60th independence anniversary.

The Commission recognises the need to create awareness of the provisions of the 1992 constitution among citizens especially the youth who will in the near future take up the mantle of leadership of the country.

Speaking at the launch, President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to jealously guard the constitution and not to lose sight of the country's history adding that, every citizen need to know and understand the laws governing the country.

He expressed firm believe in the commission's ability to discharge its constitutional mandate.
Madam Josephine Nkrumah, chairperson of the commission noted that, it is imperative that the role of the youth in shaping the destiny of the country *is* accentuated after 60 years of independence.

"After 60 years of attaining independence, and significantly 25 years of constitutional rule under the fourth republican constitution which embodies our hopes and aspirations as a people, the role of the youth in shaping the destiny of this country now more than ever should be accentuated. In the commission's view, this is necessary if we as Ghanaians are seriously pursuing a national transformation agenda," said the chairperson.

She explained that, the theme for the competition, "Restoring our Ghanaian Values as Active Citizens" was carefully crafted from the commission's theme for 2017 which placed emphasises on Ghanaian values and identity.
The maiden edition of the inter university debate seeks to promote good citizenship among the youth using the electronic quiz competition.
To participate in the competition, students are expected to learn the contents of the 1992 constitution.

Overview of the competition

How to Take a Screenshot on Almost Any Device

You’re a grownup. You know how to use a computer and a phone. So when it’s time to show off some portion of your screen, don’t try to take a photo of it—that’s kid’s stuff, and it looks like junk anyway. Just about every modern operating system has some method of saving what’s on your screen, and most of them make it pretty easy. Keep this simple guide bookmarked for every method you’ll ever need.

Windows 7 and 8

In older versions of Windows, you can merely press the Print Screen key (also marked “Print,” “PrtScn,” or “PrtSc” on some keyboards). This doesn’t actually save a copy of the screen, it copies the screen into the Windows clipboard, which can then be pasted (Ctrl+V) into any image field or graphics editor, like Paint, Paint.NET, Corel Draw, or Photoshop.

Windows 8.1 and 10

With a significant update to Windows 8.1 and following into Windows 10, Microsoft added some more modern tools. You can still use the Print Screen button to insert an image into an editor, but if you’d rather just quickly get an image file, you can press the Windows button and Print Screen at the same time (Win + PrtScn). The images will go to the “Screenshots” folder in your personal user’s Pictures folder (c:/Users/Your username/Pictures/Screenshots).

Want something even more specific? Press Alt+PrtScn to copy only the contents of your current window. This tool can’t be used to save a full image, but you can paste the contents of the window into an editor.

Windows also includes the Snipping Tool for more specific screenshots and annotations.

Microsoft’s Surface and Other Windows Tablets

Oddly, some of the first-party keyboards for Microsoft’s Surface tablets don’t include a Print Screen button. To take a screenshot from the keyboard, press Fn+Win+spacebar all at once.

Older Surface and Surface Pro tablets can also take a screenshot by pressing the Windows button on the tablet (beneath the screen) and the Down Volume button at the same time. For newer Surface models and more general Windows 10 tablets, press the Power button and Volume Down at the same time.

macOS

There are numerous ways to take a screenshot in macOS. o take a screenshot of your Mac’s entire screen, press Shift+Command+3. The image is saved directly to the desktop. To copy the image instead of saving it so that it can be inserted into an editor, Windows-style, press Command+Control+Shift+3. Your fingers will appreciate the workout.

For more specific screenshots, you can press Command+Shift+4 to open a built-in selection tool. Click and drag the selector across the area of the desktop you want to capture, with the covered area in transparent blue.

This selection area is surprisingly flexible. While dragging you can hold Shift to lock the selection vertically or horizontally, or hold Option to draw the selection square from the center out. Press the spacebar to manually move a completed selection box around, and Escape to clear it and return to your normal desktop.

Chrome OS

There’s no Print Screen button on the standard Chromebook. To take a screenshot, hold down Ctrl and then press the Switch Window button. That’s the box with two horizontal lines to the right, in between the Full Screen button and the Brightness Down button on most Chromebook keyboard layouts. An image of the full desktop will be saved to your Chrombook’s Download folder.

If you’re using another Chrome OS device with a standard keyboard, you can do the same thing with Ctrl+F5.

After you’ve taken the screenshot, you’ll see a notification in the bottom-right corner of the screen. You can press the contextual button here to copy the screenshot, and paste it (Ctrl+V) into an image editor.

Chrome OS also includes a partial screenshot tool. Hold down Ctrl+Shift+Switch Window (Ctrl+Shift+F5 on a standard keyboard), then click and drag the selection tool across a potion of the screen. When you release the mouse button, that selection will be saved as a separate image in your Downloads folder.

iOS

On iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, press the Power button and the Home button at the same time. The contents of your screen will be saved to your Camera Roll folder. Pretty simple, huh?

Android

Starting with Android 4.0, the universal command for a screenshot in Android phones and tablets is Power+Volume Down. For almost every manufacturer, this will save a screenshot of the entire screen in either the main photo folder or /Pictures/Screenshots in the user storage area.

…Except for Samsung. For some reason, Samsung insists on using the same command as the iPhone for screenshots, Power+Home. This is true for hundreds of Samsung phone and tablet models…except some of the latest. Because the newest flagship Samsung phones like the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 don’t have a physical Home button, they’ve switched back to the standard Android command, Power+Volume Down.

If you’re not sure of your manufacturer’s preference, try both Power+Volume Down and Power+Home. 99% of the time, one of them will trigger the screenshot command.

There will be no Entrance Examination for Newly Posted Teachers

The nationwide president of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Christian Addae Opoku says he has been informed by the Education Minister that teachers won’t be writing entrance exams when posted to start their work as professional teachers.
According to him, Matthew Opoku Prempeh told him he hasn’t yet received any information from the National Teaching Council which will be actually compelling teachers to write entrance exams and has also not heard an announcement by a personnel of the NTC that it is intending to implement such policy.

Meanwhile, the story has been widely circulating around the angles of media tying many onto the rope of major talking points.

However, Christian Addae is of the view that a different method could be adopted to license teachers rather than the entrance exams.
“Not only entrance exams could be used to register teachers, the appraisal system could also be used as it has been suggested by NAGRAT”, he said.
About the piloting, he said its a good strategy by the Ministry of Education which would help enhance the professionalism and competence of teachers.

“Piloting is something important…… its not license or exams they would be piloting but rather the competences which is expected of every teacher and it is really going to help a lot” he answered when quizzed.

Kenya bans the use of plastic bags

Kenya plastic bag ban comes into force after years of delays

A ban on plastic carrier bags has come into force in Kenya, which means that from Monday anyone found selling, manufacturing or carrying them could face fines of up to $38,000 or prison sentences of up to four years. The government says the ban will help protect the environment.

Credit: BBC

But manufacturers of the bags have argued that 80,000 jobs could be lost. A court on Friday rejected a challenge to the ban. Kenyans are estimated to use 24 million bags a month.

A number of other African countries have outlawed plastic carrier bags, including South Africa, Rwanda and Eritrea. This is the third attempt in the past 10 years to ban plastic bags in Kenya.

NSS Absolves Itself From Delays In Payment Of Allowances

The Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme Dr. Gifty Oware Aboagye has explained that most problems associated with the payment of allowances stem from challenges that originate from the personnel themselves but not the secretariat.

In an interview with Theophilus Sosi during a recent visit to ATL FM, Mrs Aboagye explained that, in the past, personnel experienced delays with their banks but the service now deals directly with the banks to ensure prompt payment.

She said the National Service Secretariat has instituted measures to block loopholes which enabled people to take advantage to collect allowances unduly.
She added the secretariat has instituted measures to synergize the banks of all personnel to avoid delays in payment of allowances.

UCC To Impose Strict Sanctions On Indiscipline

The Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah has cautioned students of the university against indiscipline warning, management will take any student on for engaging in any form of misbehavior.
He said the university will impose strict sanctions on any student found culpable of any form of insubordination.

The Vice Chancellor gave the stern warning while addressing students at a welcome Christian church service organized for first year students of the University.

Recently at the Congress of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG),there were reported cases of some thugs allegedly from the camp of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) known as the Invisible Forces invaded the electoral process.
