MTN GIRL CODE: Meet The Cape Coast Teams And Their Awesome Innovations

The MTN Ghana Foundation in partnership with Women in Tech Africa has launched the maiden edition of the MTN Apps camp for girls, dubbed: “MTN Girl Code: Tech camp for ladies going places.”

The initiative is to encourage young women to participate in coding and computer programming, thus increasing the number of females actively involved in the development of desktop and mobile apps.
Last week, the MTN Girl Code team held a tech bootcamp on the University of Cape Coast campus to teach girls in the region coding and entrepreneurial skills. Female participants at the bootcamp were gathered from the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast Technical University, University of Education, Winneba and some national service personnel in the central region.

At the finals and pitch day on Friday September 1, the ladies pitched their tech entrepreneurial ventures to investors at the Sasakawa Conference Centre [UCC]. The event saw the three winners awarded thousands of Ghana cedis to fund their ventures.

The winner [E-Hub educational game] took home GHc2,500, first runner up[Watzpap] ; GHc1,500 and second runner up [Fix it] GHc1,000.

E-Hub Educational Game is an educational game app that gives children a friendly environment to study. The game app features parent student and teachers on the platform to ensure scrutiny. ‘E-Hub Educational Game’ team consist of three [3] ladies.

Watzpap Events App is an online event ticketing, advertising and ushering app. The app provides the platform for users to see events around them using their phone’s GPS system. It also allows event organizers to reach a larger audience and also securing ushers to help coordinate their events. The app features an electronic ticketing system where people attend events by scanning special code received via the app, hence cutting down cost of printing ticket papers.

Fix it! is an app that helps vehicle owners locate mechanics in their vicinity in case of a vehicle breakdown. The app utilizes a smart phone’s location system to link vehicle owners to mechanics.

The MTN Girl Code team is currently in Kumasi for the next event.
